Promotive effect of minoxidil combined with retinoic acid on hair growth

Article posted on April 30th, 2007 in Hair Loss Studies | 2,405 Views | Leave a Comment

It’s been well documented that using minoxidil (Rogaine) in combination with retinoic acid (Retin-A) is more effective than just using minoxidil on its own.

Koran researchers set out to determine why this is.   They used human hair follicles that were cultured in a lab to test the growth response to minoxidil and to a combination of both minoxidil and retinoic acid.

Their tests confirmed that the combination of retinoic acid and minoxidil was more effective than minoxidil on its own.

After evaluating the various cells and growth factors before and after the solution was applied they were able to determine that the combination works in two different ways.

1. Promoting the growth of cells more effectively than minoxidil alone.
2. Prolonging the lifespan of the dermal papilla and epithelial cells by preventing premature cell death.

Western-style hair cuts are now banned in Iran

Article posted on April 29th, 2007 in Weird Hair News | 1,358 Views | Leave a Comment

The Iranian media is reporting that Iranian police are warning barbers against offering Western-style hair cuts or plucking the eyebrows of their male customers.

“Western hairstyles … have been banned,” the newspaper Etemad said in a front-page headline.

According to CNN, Iranian young men have in recent years started paying more attention to the way they look and dress, especially in affluent parts of the capital Tehran. Spiked up hair, by using gel, is known as the Khorusi (Rooster) style and some also use make-up.

Several hairdressers for men in Tehran reportedly offer hair cuts in the style of Hollywood movie stars and other Western celebrities. Clients can also have their eyebrows plucked.

These activities are now deemed un-Islamic and barbers who do not comply with the banning order might be closed down for a month and could even lose their permits to operate.

Men who get caught violating the law can receive lashes, fines and even imprisonment.

It’s unknown whether comb-overs are banned too, but it’s unlikely since they go back to the days of Julius Caesar.   One thing is for sure, Sanjaya better stay well clear of Tehran if he ever decides to go on an international concert tour.

Fear of going bald drives a man to commit crime

Article posted on April 28th, 2007 in Weird Hair News | 2,291 Views | Leave a Comment

A balding bank clerk in Hong Kong is in police custody after getting caught stealing $43,000 from a client’s dormant bank account.

According to court testimony, Alex Chan (32) stole the money to pay for hair loss treatments because he was “terrified of going bald”.

You might want to know why a man would need to steal money to pay for his hair loss treatments instead of just using his own money.   Well the answer is that Alex had already racked up debts of more than $16,000 on anti-balding treatments.

Chan’s fear of going bald apparently drove him to steal money from the dormant bank account at DBS, the bank where he worked.   He had intended to use the stolen money to pay off his previous debt and to buy more hair loss treatments.

His defense lawyer David Boyton told Hong Kong’s Eastern Court that Chan committed the crime out of “vanity, not greed,” and appealed for him to be spared a lengthy jail term.

Chan, who has since paid back all the money he stole, was remanded in custody until May 17 when he is scheduled to be sentenced, Thursday’s South China Morning Post reported.

The magistrate, William Ng, has requested that a psychological report on Chan’s fear of hair loss be prepared before he decides how to punish him.

California hair transplant clinic sued for the death of a patient

Article posted on April 27th, 2007 in Hair Transplant News | 3,109 Views | Leave a Comment

Crown Cosmetic Surgery, a Los Angeles-based hair transplant clinic that touts low prices for hair transplant surgery, is being sued after a patient died during his hair transplant surgery.

The widow of 52-year-old Walter Riley, who died during surgery on April 27, 2006, is seeking unspecified damages in her suit that was filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to her attorney Ron Wilson, a medical expert who had been retained by his law firm determined that Riley had been given an overdose of anesthetic.

“It’s a several-hour procedure. They anesthetize you, they do the hair grafts and you come out looking great later. Or that’s what’s supposed to happen,” Wilson said Wednesday. “With Mr. Riley, he went in and within an hour he was dead.”

According to media reports a person who had returned a call from Crown Cosmetic said the company’s lawyer had advised that Crown not comment on the matter.

Mr. Riley is survived by his wife Yvonne Robison-Riley and her three adult children who are also plaintiffs in the suit.

It’s very unusual for a patient to die during a hair transplant procedure because typically a patient is given a local anesthetic and is awake during the entire procedure.   It’s unknown to us what type of anesthesia Mr. Riley was under when he died.

Regrow your hair with mayonnaise

Article posted on April 24th, 2007 in Hairloss Patents | 9,610 Views | Leave a Comment

A patent has been applied for a hair loss treatment that’s made mostly from mayonnaise.

Sounds strange but inventor Eula Palmer from Brooklyn, NY believes in this enough that she has recently filed a patent for this novel hair growth treatment.

According to the patent’s description, the “magic formula” essentially consists of mayonnaise in a concentration of between 55 and 64 percent by weight, olive oil in a concentration of between 12 and 15 percent by weight, carrot oil in a concentration of between 12 and 15 percent by weight, and collagen in a concentration of between 12 and 15 percent by weight.

The patent describes the first step to the hair loss treatment as washing the hair with a predetermined shampoo and then rinsing the hair to remove traces of the shampoo. The hair is then dried and the mayonnaise concoction is applied onto the hair and distributed throughout.  The hair is then covered with a cap for at least 30 minutes and then dried with a hair dryer.  Afterwards the gunk is rinsed out the hair with lukewarm water and a desired conditioning rinse is added to the hair.

We have no idea how successful it will be, but at least you won’t go hungry if it doesn’t work.
