New York, NY (PRWEB) – Chosen for pioneering the revolutionary hair transplant technique known as Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation, Dr. Bernstein has been selected by a peer-review process from a pool of board-certified physicians who are given an anonymous and confidential opportunity to nominate outstanding doctors in various medical specialties and sub-specialties. This process is conducted by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

These special annual issues of New York Magazine present the findings of Castle Connolly who also solicits nominations from hospital Presidents, Vice Presidents of Medical Affairs or the equivalent position and Chiefs of Service in Manhattan, Staten Island Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, Long Island, Rockland County, Westchester County, and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey. Twelve thousand forms are sent for each selection process.

The medical professionals are asked to nominate the best doctors in a particular field. New York Magazine published the opinions of nominators who took into account Dr. Bernstein’s education, residency, board certification, hospital appointment, disciplinary record and reputation for dealing with patients of his sub-specialty, surgical hair restoration.

Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. is a research and information company which publishes a variety of books that seek to guide patients on how to find the best medical care. The physicians included in NY Magazine are representative of the top 2 percent of New York area doctors. Dr. Bernstein is honored to be the only hair transplant physician listed for eight consecutive years.

Dr. Bernstein is the most widely published author on the subject of Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation, with over fifty articles, editorial reviews, books and textbook chapters. His landmark scientific papers are considered to be seminal works in the field of hair restoration surgery. In addition to a busy surgical practice, Dr. Bernstein teaches at Columbia University and lectures both nationally and internationally on the treatment of hair loss.

Hair transplant procedures increased by 34 percent in 2006 http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/hair-transplant-procedures-increased-by-34-percent-in-2006/ http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/hair-transplant-procedures-increased-by-34-percent-in-2006/#comments Thu, 21 Jun 2007 09:36:31 +0000 admin Hair Transplant News http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/hair-transplant-procedures-increased-by-34-percent-in-2006/

GENEVA, Ill — Approximately 225,800 hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2006, up 34 percent from 2004, according to statistics released today from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) – a society for hair restoration physicians.

This large increase in hair restoration procedures coincides with a significant jump in the total number of hair restoration patients worldwide — from 361,077 patients in 2004 to 645,281 patients in 2006.

“The tremendous growth in hair restoration can be attributed to the continual refinements in modern day hair transplants and proven medical therapies that produce natural-looking results that are virtually undetectable,” said Paul C. Cotterill, MD, president of the ISHRS. “Increased public awareness about hair restoration procedures and the range of treatment options now available to both men and women are driving this increased demand around the world.”

While men have traditionally dominated the hair restoration patient base, the proportion of women undergoing surgical hair restoration procedures appears to be on the rise. Since 2004, the percent of female surgical hair restoration patients has risen by 2.4 percent — from 11.4 percent in 2004 to 13.8 percent in 2006.

In addition, the survey found that patients are seeking treatment for hair loss at a younger age. ISHRS members provided percentages of male and female surgical patients treated by age category, and more than half (57.9%) of patients fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old. Surgical patients in their 30s represented the age group with the largest number of patients undergoing hair restoration surgery (31.4 percent males and 26.4 percent females) — a shift from 2004 in which patients in their 40s comprised the largest number of surgical patients.

Specifically, the survey found an increase in the number of younger men undergoing hair restoration surgery from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, 17 percent of men aged 20 to 29 sought surgical treatment for their hair loss compared to 15 percent in 2004. The number of male surgical patients between the ages of 30 to 39 years old also increased — with 31.6 percent seeking treatment in 2006 vs. 28.7 percent in 2004.

When ISHRS members were asked the average age of their patients who underwent hair restoration surgery for the first time in 2006, nearly half (48 percent) of patients were between 30 and 39 years old, with patients in their 40s representing the second-largest age group of first-time surgery patients (36 percent).

“It’s not uncommon for people to start noticing hair loss or thinning in their 20s and 30s, which can make them feel very self-conscious and add years to their appearance,” added Dr. Cotterill. “Early detection and intervention are essential to treating and preventing future hair loss, and, as our survey shows, more men and women are deciding that they want to address the problem while they’re younger instead of delaying treatment.”

Other key findings of the survey found that 92.9 percent of hair transplant procedures targeted the scalp area, and 7.1 percent of procedures targeted non-scalp areas of the body, including:

  • Eyebrows (3.4 percent in 2006 vs. 3 percent in 2004)
  • Face/moustache/beard (1.5 percent in 2006 vs. 1 percent in 2004)
  • Eyelashes (1.4 percent in 2006 vs. 0.35 percent in 2004)

Founded in 1993, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery is a non-profit medical association dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of hair restoration. With a membership of over 650 physicians worldwide, the ISHRS provides continuing medical education to physicians specializing in hair loss and restoration surgery and serves as a resource for the public on the latest medical and surgical hair restoration treatments for hair loss.

Hair transplant giant Bosley set to acquire rival Medical Hair Restoration http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/hair-transplant-giant-bosley-set-to-acquire-rival-medical-hair-restoration/ http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/hair-transplant-giant-bosley-set-to-acquire-rival-medical-hair-restoration/#comments Fri, 04 May 2007 09:54:52 +0000 admin Hair Transplant News http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/hair-transplant-giant-bosley-set-to-acquire-rival-medical-hair-restoration/

Tokyo - Aderans Co. Ltd. shares are up by 1.8 percent to 2,765 yen after the hairpiece and hair transplant company said it or its US-based unit Bosley Inc. will buy rival Leavitt Management Inc.

Leavitt Management Inc. is the corporation which owns Medical Hair Restoration, the second largest hair transplant clinic in the USA. The company also owns several dermatology and laser hair clinics.

An Aderans spokesman said it sees potential and aims to boost its profile in the United States as there is no major hair transplant company other than number one Bosley, which has about a 10% market share, and number two, Medical Hair Restoration, which has around 8% of the market.  The remaining 82% share of the market is in the hands of individual hair transplant doctors.  It’s expected that Aderans will use the combined clout of the two companies advertising budgets - which runs into the hundred millions - to increase their market share.

Bosley has over 85 hair loss replacement office locations in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, while Medical Hair Restoration has 46 locations nationwide.  Not all locations are actual medical clinics where hair transplant surgeries are performed.

The acquisition deal has been reported to cost $47,457,000.  The two companies are expected to finish hammering out the details by the end of June.

It’s unknown at this time whether they intend continuing to operate under different banners or will be merging into a single entity.

California hair transplant clinic sued for the death of a patient http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/california-hair-transplant-clinic-sued-for-the-death-of-a-patient/ http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/california-hair-transplant-clinic-sued-for-the-death-of-a-patient/#comments Fri, 27 Apr 2007 08:46:53 +0000 admin Hair Transplant News http://news.hairlosshelp.com/hair-transplant-news/california-hair-transplant-clinic-sued-for-the-death-of-a-patient/

Crown Cosmetic Surgery, a Los Angeles-based hair transplant clinic that touts low prices for hair transplant surgery, is being sued after a patient died during his hair transplant surgery.

The widow of 52-year-old Walter Riley, who died during surgery on April 27, 2006, is seeking unspecified damages in her suit that was filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to her attorney Ron Wilson, a medical expert who had been retained by his law firm determined that Riley had been given an overdose of anesthetic.

“It’s a several-hour procedure. They anesthetize you, they do the hair grafts and you come out looking great later. Or that’s what’s supposed to happen,” Wilson said Wednesday. “With Mr. Riley, he went in and within an hour he was dead.”

According to media reports a person who had returned a call from Crown Cosmetic said the company’s lawyer had advised that Crown not comment on the matter.

Mr. Riley is survived by his wife Yvonne Robison-Riley and her three adult children who are also plaintiffs in the suit.

It’s very unusual for a patient to die during a hair transplant procedure because typically a patient is given a local anesthetic and is awake during the entire procedure.   It’s unknown to us what type of anesthesia Mr. Riley was under when he died.

One positive aspect for one lucky winner was to win a free hair transplant along with other prizes.   Russ Jowell who won the free hair transplant is being interviewed in this video clip.
