A Nebraska-based company is selling a new hair product they claim will improve hair growth without side effects. The product is based on a substance extracted from apples called polyphenols or procyanidin B-2.
Japanese researchers first discovered that apple polyphenols or procyanidin B-2 was effective in regrowing hair in a study they performed. After testing and studying over 1,000 botantical extracts they found that the procyanidin B-2 had the following effects on their test subjects.
• 78.9% of their subjects showed an increased mean value of hair diameter
• Their number of terminal hairs and total hairs was “significantly increased” compared to the control group.
The researchers observed that procyanidin B-2 seems to promote hair growth by prolonging the anagen phase (active growth phase) and shortening the telogen phase (resting phase) in the hair follicle cycle. The result was increased hair growth. This led to the research team concluding that topical procyanidin B-2 was a safe and effective treatment for male pattern baldness.
The results of this study were published in the British Journal of Dermatology.
Procyandin B-2 appears to work by blocking the production of TGF Beta, a degraded form of DHT. It is DHT and its various forms like TGF Beta that cause the hair follicle to shrink and the hair to fall out in people affected by Androgenetic Alopecia also known as Male Pattern Baldness (MPB).
The company calls its products Poly-GROTM and offers it both as a capsule and as a topical solution. The company is also offering a report detailing the scientific studies performed on this product.
