GENEVA, Ill. /PRNewswire/ — World-renown surgical hair restoration experts will present the latest medical and surgical advances in treating hair loss in Asians at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s (ISHRS) Asian Hair Surgery Workshop hosted by ISHRS member Kenichiro Imagawa, M.D., of Yokohama, Japan. This special, three-day workshop is designed to demonstrate the unique considerations for performing hair transplants in Asians through a series of educational lectures and live surgeries.

“Around the world, hair transplants are becoming the treatment of choice for hair loss by creating natural-looking, permanent results that are virtually undetectable,” said Dr. Imagawa, workshop director. “This workshop will further explore the ethnic differences of the scalp and hair between Asians and Caucasians and identify which surgical techniques achieve optimal results for Asians suffering from hair loss.”

Surgical hair transplants use the patient’s own existing scalp hair to restore new hair growth in thin or bald areas safely and effectively. Today, a number of new transplant techniques are used to address the aesthetic needs of each individual patient — from creating dense areas of new hair growth on the top of the scalp to skillfully reconstructing a receding hairline.

A sampling of the topics to be presented at the ISHRS Asian Hair Surgery Workshop include:

  - Megasession and Ultra Densepacking in Asians
  - Management of Hair Loss in Women
  - Donor Harvesting with Minimal Transection and Invisible to Minimal Scar
  - Hair Transplantation of Eyebrows, Eyelash and Pubic Hair

In addition, the latest medical treatments will be discussed, including the recent introduction of finasteride (Propecia(R)). An oral medication available by prescription only, finasteride has been shown in clinical trials to produce long-term improvement in scalp hair growth and to slow scalp hair loss in a majority of men with androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern hair loss.

“Permanent hair restoration procedures continue to gain popularity across Asia, with surgical hair transplantation offering Asians a highly customized treatment option that takes into account the unique features specific to this patient population,” added Paul C. Cotterill, M.D., president of the ISHRS. “The ISHRS is pleased to offer this workshop to hair restoration physicians around the world who are committed to expanding their base of knowledge on the latest surgical techniques and best practices for Asian patients.”
