The Internet has changed a lot about the way Americans approach daily life. From communication to research to shopping and financial management, the web is a major resource for millions. However, even with the great strides being made, Americans are looking for more help managing their health online.
A new study sponsored by Cisco systems has shown a large shift in the number of Americans going online to help manage their health.
Sixty one percent of Americans have used online health tools — and one in five say they are a healthier person because of the Internet. But, 61 percent also say they can’t directly email their doctor, go online to schedule appointments, check practice information or find their doctor’s credentials.
While patients have taken to the web, according to the study doctors aren’t taking enough advantage of it.
“Patients don’t just want good bedside manner, they want good “web-side manner” too,” says Cisco’s Francis Dare.
Dare says medical professionals must be encouraged to better use technology.
Cisco is doing its part to encourage this. In addition to aiding many healthcare related projects, Cisco is a member of the Silicon Valley Pay for Performance consortium, which rewards doctors that use technology to share information and improve patient care.
Hopefully things will improve as more doctors embrace the internet and take advantage of all it has to offer.
